Founding Story

Student Paper Writing

The statistics shed light on the magnitude of the challenge. In Washington (WA, USA) schools during the 2022-23 academic year, out of approximately 145,000 ELL students, only around 8,000 students (~5.5%) met standards on the WIDAACC test. This test measures performance in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and passing it signifies English proficiency. This low percentage indicates a significant gap in achieving English language proficiency among ELL students.

The problem addressed by padhAI is the lower English Language Learning (ELL) rates among immigrant youth compared to non-ELL students in the same grades and schools. This issue has significant implications for the academic and future success of these students. The founder of padhAI, Sanj Saini, recognized this problem and developed the platform with the primary goal of expediting English proficiency among immigrant youth.

Furthermore, the graduation rate gap between ELL learners and non-ELL learners in 2023 was a significant 14.5%. This disparity highlights the additional obstacles faced by ELL students in completing their education and graduating compared to their non-ELL peers. It emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to support ELL students throughout their academic journey.

The demographic implications of addressing this problem are significant. Immigration plays a crucial role in shaping the future demographic landscape of the United States. According to the Pew Research Center, from 2005 to 2050, new immigrants and their descendants are projected to account for 82% of population growth. Ensuring the academic success and English proficiency of immigrant youth is essential for their integration, workforce participation, and overall societal well-being.

Tall Buildings
All Hands In

ELL students encompass a diverse range of backgrounds, including newcomers, students with interrupted formal education (SIFE), long-term ELL students, and former ELL students. These students face various challenges related to being immigrants, such as cultural differences, instructional staff shortages, assessment tools, and limited parent involvement. These factors compound the already complex process of acquiring English language skills and contribute to the achievement gap between ELL and non-ELL students.

Urgency

Economic Impact of Language Skills: According to the Migration Policy Institute, immigrants with limited English proficiency face higher unemployment and lower wages compared to those proficient in English, highlighting their economic disadvantage.

Language Barriers - Workforce: A study by the Center for Immigration Studies found that immigrants with limited English proficiency are more likely to work in low-skilled, low-wage jobs with limited career growth, highlighting the importance of English proficiency for better job opportunities.

Educational Attainment and Language Skills: Research by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that English proficiency is linked to higher educational attainment and better outcomes, with proficient students more likely to pursue post-secondary education.

Language Support and Academic Success: A study in the American Educational Research Journal found that English language support programs significantly boost academic achievement for ELL students, leading to better outcomes in core subjects and overall success.

Language Barriers - Parent Involvement: Immigrant parents with limited English skills often struggle to be involved in their children's education. A study in the American Journal of Education found that language barriers make it hard for parents and schools to communicate.

Demographic Trends: According to the Migration Policy Institute, in 2020, about 44.9 million immigrants lived in the U.S., and nearly 25% of children had at least one foreign-born parent. Addressing the English learning needs of this population is crucial for their integration and success.

How We Measure Impact Through Various Metrics and Methods

User Feedback and Surveys

Language Proficiency Assessments

Academic Achievement Indicators

The project collects feedback from students, educators, and administrators through surveys and interviews. This qualitative data provides valuable insights into user satisfaction and areas for improvement.

The project uses standardized tests to track how well ELL students are learning English, including: speaking, listening, reading, and writing to give a complete picture of language growth.

The project monitors grades, test scores, and graduation rates of ELL students before and after program participation to gauge how improved language skills affect academic success.

Challenges We May Cross

Access and Equity

Making sure all ELL students, no matter where they're from or how much money they have, can access the project's resources is tough. Efforts must be made to reach marginalized communities and provide necessary support.

Language and Cultural Diversity

Supporting ELL students means adapting lessons to their diverse backgrounds. We must respect each student's unique needs and identity.

Technological Infrastructure

Some communities might lack enough technology like good internet and devices. We should work to make sure everyone has what they need for the language learning program.
